How to Do At Home Microdermabrasion

If you’ve ever wondered just what Microdermabrasion is, what the benefits are, and how to perform at home microdermabrasion, then I’ve got you covered in today’s post!

I’m sharing why I personally use at home microdermabrasion to keep my skin looking its healthiest and how the process of microdermabrasion helps reveal younger-looking skin that is more vibrant and beautiful.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

So just what is microdermabrasion? Well it’s really not as complicated as you might think and the benefits are amazing!

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, deep facial treatment that involves the process of skin exfoliation to remove dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion works by exfoliating your skin with an abrasive, mineral tip to remove the skin’s impurities and helps stimulate new skin growth for a younger-looking complexion. To put it simply- you’re removing dry, rough texture to make room for new, smoother skin!

Microdermabrasion can help address and minimize many skincare concerns including uneven skin tone, clogged pores, blackheads, acne, fine lines, minor scars, and age spots.

Although microdermabrasion used to be a treatment only offered in spas or at a dermatologist’s office, it can now be easily performed at home with at home microdermabrasion kits like this one from Methode Brigitte Kettner, for a fraction of the price.

Methode Brigitte Kettner (MBK) is an amazing and successful European skincare line that’s been sold in Europe and Asia for over 30 years. MBK is now available in the U.S. and they offer a full line of innovative and naturally derived skincare products and devices. All of their products contain no parabens, no animal bi-products, and they don’t test on animals, which I really love!

They believe that having great skin is something that should be attainable for everyone and every budget, and I really love that they offer skincare devices at a more affordable price than what you’d pay for going to a dermatologist.

If you’ve wanted to try microdermabrasion but haven’t been able to commit to the steep spa or dermatologist prices, then doing microdermabrasion at-home is the perfect solution. Purchasing a great at home microdermabrasion kit truly pays for itself after just one treatment, and allows you to achieve the same great results in the comfort of your own home without breaking the bank.

What Are the Benefits of At Home Microdermabrasion?

Unlike skin cleansing devices which are used to remove makeup, microdermabrasion is more intensive and works to remove dead skin cells and improve your skin’s overall health and appearance.

The process of removing the outer layer of skin helps promote blood circulation and encourages your skin to become stronger and smoother. In just a few uses, microdermabrasion can help reveal a healthier, younger-looking complexion.

Here are just a few of the key microdermabrasion facial benefits:

  • Provides deep exfoliation
  • Removes dead skin and dry patches
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Effective against fighting acne/blackheads
  • De-clogs pores
  • Evens out skin tone
  • Improves complexion and skin’s natural glow
  • Better product absorption

By polishing the skin microdermabrasion can make your skin appear younger in helping smooth out your overall complexion, and can help reduce fine lines, acne, dark spots, and more.

Another key benefit of microdermabrasion is the fact that it helps make topical skin products more effective.

Microdermabrasion removes the top layer of dead skin which allows products to more effectively absorb into the skin for optimal benefit. This is great for both your skin and your wallet, as you will be able to use less product on your skin.

Best At Home Microdermabrasion Device

If you’ve noticed your skin is looking a little dull, it’s probably time to exfoliate!

Currently I’m using the MBK Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliation Device 1-2 times a month, and so far I’m loving the results. As I’ve talked about many times on the blog, a lot of the times the reason that your makeup might not look as good as it could, is because the skin underneath isn’t healthy.

I’m always shocked at home many people skimp on their skincare routine, when it should be the most important part of your beauty routine.

Regular exfoliation plays a big part in the health and appearance of your skin and to me it’s well worth it to spend money on great skincare products that help keep my skin looking young, healthy, and vibrant.

How To Use Microdermabrasion Device

Step 1: Remove all makeup and cleanse the skin with a gentle cleanser to get rid of dirt, oil, and impurities. Pat your skin completely dry to ensure the most effective microdermabrasion treatment.

Step 2: Once your device has been charged, apply your desired treatment tip. The MBK Microdermabrasion device comes with two different tips including normal and sensitive. I personally recommend all beginners start out with the sensitive tip first and work your way up to the normal tip, if needed.Don’t worry- you’ll find that even the sensitive tip is quite powerful and has an amazing suction to it.

Step 3: Turn the device on to the desired level by pushing the button once or twice. Using your free hand pull an area of the skin tight and move device lightly in an upward stroke, doing no more than two passes in the same spot. Strokes should be even and gentle and you should avoid pressing down hard on the skin.

Step 4: Repeat this process over the entire face, using extra care near delicate spots like the eyes. The entire process should only take anywhere between 5-15 minutes and will quicken once you are more comfortable using the device.

Important Microdermabrasion Aftercare Tips

Cleanse

After performing microdermabrasion on the skin, cleanse the skin immediately with warm water to remove any dead skin or residue from your treatment.

Next, use a hydrating toner to help balance out the skin’s pH and to prep the skin for moisturizer. I personally love using these glow tonic wipes daily before applying moisturizer and it helps ensure I’m getting the full benefits of whatever products I apply to my skin.

Moisturize

Once the skin is fully dry, apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer allover the face and neck area. I have a couple of favorite gel moisturizers that I go back and forth between including this Aquaflash Hydrating oneand this Cucumber and Mango one. This will help both re-hydrate the skin and reduce any signs of redness on the skin from the treatment.

Continue applying moisturizer daily following your treatment to ensure best results. If possible, avoid wearing foundation for a few days to let your skin breathe.

Protect

Lastly, it is recommended that sunscreen be worn daily after performing microdermabrasion on the skin. As the top layer of your skin was removed during the microdermabrasion process, your skin is in a vulnerable state and is at a higher risk of getting sun damage.

As I recently shared in my 6 Tips for Healthy Glowing Skin post, I’ve been loving using this Vitamin C Brightening Facial Oil Stick, which helps revitalize and hydrate the skin and has SPF 30 in it to protect the skin. (Plus who doesn’t want to smell like yummy oranges?!)

Frequently Asked Questions:

– Who Should Use At Home Microdermabrasion?

Ideal candidates for at home microdermabrasion treatments are those with minor skin imperfections including uneven skin tone, clogged pores, blackheads, acne, fine lines, minor scars, and age spots.

Microdermabrasion is NOT recommended for those who have any types of open wounds or sores on their face and is not recommended for pregnant women.

– How Often to Do Microdermabrasion Treatments?

At home microdermabrasion should be performed 1-2 times monthly, and it is recommended you follow the after-care guidelines (included above) for best results.

Most dermatologists will recommend a waiting period of at least 2 weeks between treatments.

– Does Microdermabrasion Hurt & What Are the Side Effects, If Any?

I personally have sensitive skin and I don’t think microdermabrasion hurts at all. That said- depending on your skin type and sensitivity level, redness in delicate areas may occur following your first microdermabrasion treatment. Typically this will disappear within 1-2 days following the treatment. (If your skin does react be sure and moisturize well following your treatment.)
